Of all the Impressionists, Sisley was the one most committed to landscape. The artist was impassioned by this theme even more than the others from the movement. His light-toned landscapes afforded him the opportunity to unfold all of his lyrical sensitivity.

Alfred Sisley stayed true to the Impressionist style in its most pure form, never abandoning, even temporarily, his goal of capturing the transient effects of light and atmosphere. The Edge of the Woods, one of his later works, is among the painter’s most gentle, idyllic paintings, revealing the influence of Camille Corot, especially in the soft, harmonious colors.
