Pissarro was an influential member of the Impressionists and came to be seen as a mentor and father figure to painters such as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gaugin, and Georges Seurat. He is known for his pictures of the French countryside.
During the last years of his life, Pissarro struggled with eye issues and could not paint outdoors as he had done before. He did not stop painting landscapes, but instead captured views such as this one out the window of hotel rooms.
