Edvard Munch was born in Hedmark County, Norway and later moved to Kristiania (present day Oslo). He trained as an architect at the Royal Technical College before enrolling in the Royal School of Design with a focus on painting. He traveled between Norway and Paris throughout his career, exhibiting at different exhibitions and the Norwegian section of the World's Fair in 1885, one year before Man with Hat Seated on a Veranda was created. Much of Munch's subject matter from the late 1880s involved streetscapes, windows, and interior spaces, as well as top-hatted men.
