Through the 1940's, Bischoff painted in the stream of Abstract Expression-ism, as exemplified by Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko, his former teachers. About 1952 he moved away from this school, and joined with David Park and Richard Diebenkorn in a return to painting representational subjects, particularly the human figure.
