Tomas Downing is perhaps best known for his mesmerizing dot paintings. An early member of the Washington Color School, he was fascinated by the interaction of pure color and raw canvas, and felt that dots were the “simple and direct” form best suited to convey the expressiveness of pure color. Downing explored dots extensively, working through several series, each demonstrating a new dimension of pure color.
