Here Picasso examines the relationship of the artist with his model – a subject which held his attention throughout his career and to which he returned with increasing frequency in his later years, producing literally hundreds, if not thousands, of drawings on the topic. The model of this picture is his second wife, Jacqueline Roque, but she is as much a symbol of sexual love, as nature, of “the eternal feminine,” as she is a specific individual with a specific role.
